Siemens and XP Technology Introduce Wireless IP System That Sets Standard for C&I Electric Metering ApplicationsMiami, FL — March 1, 2000 Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution and XP Technology today introduced the Spectrum Integrated Meter System (SIMSTM), an end-to-end monitoring, control, and information management software system for commercial and industrial (C&I) electric metering applications. SIMS technology utilizes wireless public communications networks and the Internet to provide cost-effective automated meter reading (AMR), power quality information and alarms, load management, outage detection, tamper detection and other value-added features. Special SIMS electronic modules are enclosed "under glass" within Siemens Spectrum S4 solid state C&I meters, dramatically simplifying network installation and reducing costs. SIMS modules effectively transform the meters into wireless, Internet protocol (IP) enabled communications devices. In contrast, typical AMR applications often require installing communications black boxes and developing a private communications network. SIMS modules maintain and transmit data on energy usage and peak load consumption for up to four meter channels. At that level, modules can provide time-of-use rates, an important financial planning consideration for C&I customers. SIMS modules can respond to demand read requests and generate and transmit power quality and other event alarms. Additionally, they can provide output pulses for customer energy management systems. "Commercial and industrial consumers are a power provider's most valued customers," said Jan van Dokkum, president and CEO of Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution. "Siemens and XP Technology are the first to seize the opportunity to provide a cost-effective, robust platform to address the unique requirements of this vital segment." Siemens and XP Technology are demonstrating SIMS technology this week at the DistribuTech 2000 Conference and Exhibition in Miami. "XP Technology is pleased to partner with Siemens in bringing the value of fixed wireless applications to the power marketplace," said Mark E. Rodgers, CEO of XP Technology. "We are excited to see the impact of this transforming technology within the electric industry as it undergoes its own conversion to a fully competitive market. We are convinced the Spectrum system will become the industry standard for the new, customer-focused energy enterprise." The SIMS network includes a powerful computer server that manages communications between the power provider's enterprise and the Spectrum S4 meter. SIMS utilizes patent-pending technology to minimize the data burden over public networks, ensuring the lowest cost connectivity and eliminating the capital expense of building private networks. It integrates with existing computer systems, such as billing, customer relationship management, and field force automation, to enhance and extend such features as data-mart/data warehousing, transaction validation, account totalization and other value added functionality. Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution, Inc., headquartered in Wendell, N.C., manufactures and markets equipment and energy service solutions for electric utilities, independent power producers, co-generators and other energy-intensive industries. It has operations in Charlotte, N.C., Orlando, Fla., Jackson, Miss., Lafayette, Ind., Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Reynosa, Mexico. XP Technology is a leading provider of end-to-end fixed wireless solutions, which bring the power of wireless IP communications to business devices. Through its M32TM System, XP Technology connects remote devices to the Internet, corporate intranets, and information management systems through public networks.
