Florida Power and Light Using SmartSynch's Wireless Data SolutionsJackson, MS — August 21, 2000 SmartSynch, a leading provider of end-to-end wireless data solutions, announced today that Florida Power & Light (FPL), one of the nation’s largest providers of electrical power and services, has become one of the company’s initial customers, implementing SmartSynch's wireless data solution to build online connections with power meters. The energy and utility market is the first commercial use of SmartSynch's end-to-end solution that wirelessly connects businesses with their field and mobile workforce assets. Nationwide, utility commercial and industrial (C&I) customers require enhanced service reporting and communications capabilities. SmartSynch’s applications provide a cost effective means for utilities to provide these types of data services, leading to increased satisfaction and operational efficiency levels. FPL is clearly a leader in the dynamic energy industry and we are proud that they have chosen to implement SmartSynch’s solutions. We are confident that their customers will realize immediate service efficiencies with our end-to-end solution,” said Mark Rodgers, CEO of SmartSynch. The features and benefits we provide are of great value to FPL and their customers, because smart meters provide the missing link connecting remote meters with the company's technicians and customer service representatives.SmartSynch’s wireless data services are currently targeted to provide solutions for C&I customers. FPL will replace several thousand Solid State Data Recorders (SSDRs) with wireless smart meters and expects to commence deployment by the end of September. In most cases, utility companies rely on customer notification to determine an outage or other problem. SmartSynch’s smart meters with remote power quality and reliability (PQ/R) reporting capability expediently report trouble to the appropriate staff and send status updates to the customer. SmartSynch’s integrated data network notifies the customer via alphanumeric pager, fax or e-mail. Our main objective is to establish direct and automatic communication between FPL and the customer,” said Ed Brill, Power Quality Business Manager with Florida Power & Light. Smart meters provide benefits that go beyond the traditional meter’s basic function of measuring consumption for billing purposes,” said Ed Malemezian, Data Collection Manager for EDMPro.com, FPL’s Energy Data Management business. According to Malemezian, SmartSynch’s technology provides information used internally to better evaluate situations as they occur on the power system. It also provides the opportunity to offer additional value-added services, which better meet customers’ needs and puts FPL a cut above the competition. Smart meters report power related problems to us and respond to the customer in a more timely manner,” said Brill. “SmartSynch makes that possible.
